Looking for a winter beater for ice and rally cross racing. I found this 2002 2.5TS With 156k miles on it. It's a hatch and a 5 speed. Has that trade mark subie burble and I sort of really want it now that the 944 is going away for the winter. The seller will let it go for 1700 dollars, thoughts?

I'd take a look at it. High mileage Subarus seem, to me, to either be great, terrible, or great and terrible.

I think, as I said the other day, the main problem these things have is piston slap . I'd have a mechanic listen to it on cold startup. Otherwise I've no knowledge. Piston slap also a problem in earlier Honda 4 cylinders, I believe.

If the head gaskets have been done, it sounds like a good deal. If not, there's a good chance they'll eventually need it. They'll cost about that much.

At that mileage the timing belt should've been done (100 or 120K, IIRC) and the headgaskets have likely failed and been done as well. If you can get confirmation/receipts for those being done within the last 40k miles or so it could be a good deal.

I have one in Vermont with 300k+ on it. Hit a deer with it last winter, bent the radiator, got me home the next 30 miles in the snow.
That's just one instance of how much of a warhorse that friggin car is.
Get it.
